Define Social Agreement

As members of a society, we agree with the social contract – we cooperate with each other and obey the laws of society. We also give up certain freedoms because we want the protection that society can offer. The founders of the United States believed that the social contract made citizens powerful and gave them a collective voice within their government. The concept of the social contract was originally introduced by Glaukon, as described by Plato in The Republic, Book II. According to Locke, the state of nature is not a condition of individuals, as is the case with Hobbes. On the contrary, it is populated by mothers and fathers with their children or families – what he calls “conjugal society” (para. 78).
